Total Home Protection: 6 Ways To Ensure Safety When Bringing Service Workers Into Your Home

Ned Thetech

Protect yourself and your family when you need work done in your home during the pandemic. When workers or service specialists enter your home, both of you need to take extra precautions. This is to ensure that everyone is safe from Covid-19 virus. Since people spend more time indoors, it’s important to have a high level of air quality at home and that your family is comfortable at all times.

Hiring in-home services or repair technicians for your HVAC unit may seem like a dilemma, especially if you’ve been hesitant to allow others to enter your home. We understand that it will be difficult to let someone inside your house to fix the problem during a pandemic. Because of this, we have listed 6 tips to ensure your family’s safety when bringing in service workers.

Do the following prior to the service appointment

Reschedule the service provider’s visit if you or a family member has Covid-19  symptoms or had close contact with someone infected. Second, those household members that are at risk of severe illness, such as elderlies and people with chronic conditions, should consider not being at home during the service. Third, consult ahead of time as much as possible before the service to minimize the time technicians spend inside your home. Explain the issue over the phone or email in detail including sending of photos as necessary. Make it a “Contactless service” as much as possible. Fourth, verify if the service provider takes any COVID-19 precautions to ensure total home protection during the service call.

The service provider should wear protective gear at all times

This includes wearing fresh shoe covers, face masks, and protective gloves inside your home. While repairs or maintenance are being done, other household members should wear masks properly inside the home too. Hands should be cleaned before putting masks on, taking them off, and touching them at any time. The mask should cover the nose, mouth, and chin.  When shoe covers, masks and gloves are taken off, they should be stored in a clean plastic bag or thrown out in a trash bin. Lastly, masks with valves should not be used as it allows virus particles to escape. Consider having a spare mask to offer at home in case the technicians’ masks break, become wet or contaminated. Remember that masks alone are not sufficient to protect against COVID-19. Read the other tips below.

Observe social distancing

Technicians should refrain from shaking hands and high fiving. Always keep your distance from the service provider, and keep other household members and pets away. The closer and longer you interact with others, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spreading. Limit close face-to-face contact with people and stay at least 6 feet apart. Keep indoor conversations to a minimum. All conversations with service providers should take place outside whenever possible.

Maximize the amount of ventilation inside the home

When indoor services are occurring, use an air conditioner, a fan, or open windows in the area. These ventilation methods can prevent virus droplets from lingering in confined spaces and lower the risk of virus transmission.

Instead of paying in cash, use touchless payment

It’s best to use touchless payment methods or pay over the phone to avoid touching money, a card, or a keypad. If you have to pay with a credit card, cash or touch a keypad, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Our technicians at Pacific Aire are regularly sanitizing electronic devices after each use. Check out the payment options your provider offers to minimize the chance of touching surfaces.

Clean and disinfect any surfaces in your home that may have been touched by the service provider after the service is completed.

After they leave, clean any surfaces they’ve touched with disinfectant wipes. You may also use disinfectant spray in the surrounding area. If you think a service provider is sick or is showing Covid-19 symptoms, do not allow them into your home.
