8 Reasons Why Your AC Unit Is Not Turning On

Ned Thetech

A malfunctioning air conditioning system can be quite frustrating. Why is your AC unit not turning on? No one wants to deal with this issue especially during the hot weather. A minor problem in the air conditioning parts can compromise the system’s performance.  A central air conditioning system consists of the air ducts, evaporator coils, furnace, motors, condenser unit, fans, and other components.

There are usually quick fixes you can do at home to solve the problems. If other problems arise you’ll need to contact a professional HVAC technician to safely evaluate the problem.  Here are 8 of the likely reasons why your air conditioner does not turn on. We also offer some simple solutions to get your air conditioning system running again.

Clogged Air Filter

It is important to check your air conditioner’s filter is clean. If the air filter is plugged up, certain units won’t turn on until a new, unclogged air filter is installed. Your AC system will be more efficient and safe if it has this feature. Need help in changing your air filter? Set an appointment with us at Pacific Aire. Check out this do-it-yourself tutorial.

Thermostat Doesn’t Work

You should clean the electromechanical thermostat periodically if you have one.

Make sure your thermostat is working properly if your filter is clean. It should have power and be set for cooling or heating. An AC system can be easily shut down if the thermostat is broken. You should check that your thermostat has functional batteries and is clean and level. You may need to check your home’s circuit breakers or power supply if it still does not work.

The Power Is Out

Check the breaker box to see if there is any tripped breaker preventing your air conditioning system from receiving power. Flip the breaker all the way off and then on again. When the AC does not turn on altogether, reset the breaker. The jump may be exactly what the central air system needs to restart.  It is vital that if the breaker keeps tripping, you have a licensed technician inspect the wiring before you restore power. Contact your utility service provider if you don’t have any electricity at all. To diagnose and repair any electrical issues, contact an HVAC company that is licensed and reputable. Wiring or loose terminals may need to be repaired or tightened by the technician.

Obstructed Outdoor Unit

The outdoor condenser fan and fins of your AC could be clogged with leaves, grass, and other debris. It is advised to have a professional clean the condenser unit if this might have happened. You can also do it yourself by checking some tutorials

Broken Transformer or Contactor

Controlling the air conditioner or heat pump with a transformer and contactor is how air conditioners and heat pumps turn on or off. You will need to contact a professional for replacement if they don’t work anymore.

The Fuse Has Blown

An HVAC contractor can conduct a continuity test on fuses to determine whether they are functioning properly. A multimeter is used to measure the continuity. There will be a test of both fuses. The multimeter should beep if your fuses are functioning properly. A replacement can be purchased at a hardware store if one of them does not beep.

The Evaporator Coils Are Dirty

All the icky stuff we live with can build up on your air conditioner’s evaporator coils, condenser, or filters. This includes dirt, dander, and dust that are accumulating at home.  Your air conditioner has numerous components that are susceptible to collecting debris. As debris accumulates on various parts of your air conditioner, your system becomes less efficient and may eventually malfunction. Both you and your air conditioning system will benefit by scheduling regular AC maintenance.

The Motor Stopped Functioning

You may have a faulty motor if your air conditioner made strange noises before it stopped working. Performing a capacitor test can help you determine whether your motor still has some power. A motor problem should be looked into with several quotes compared to the cost of a new AC unit.
