5 Things to Try Before You Call for AC Service

Lisa Lewolt

There’s nothing quite like the cool comfort of an air conditioner (AC) on a hot summer day. But what do you do when your AC system isn’t cooling as it should, or worse yet, not working at all? Instead of rushing to call a professional and potentially paying unnecessary costs, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try. Here, we will guide you through five checks to conduct before resorting to professional AC service.

1. Thermostat Settings

Start by ensuring that your thermostat is set correctly. It’s simple, but it’s an easy detail to overlook and could save you an unnecessary call-out fee. Make sure the thermostat is switched to ‘cooling’ mode, and the temperature setting is below the current room temperature. Sometimes, it could be a matter of adjusting the settings or rebooting the device if it’s digital.

Furthermore, check if the thermostat’s batteries need replacing, as weak or dead batteries can cause it to malfunction. Always remember that your thermostat is like the “brains” of your HVAC system – if it’s not working correctly, neither will your AC.

2. Vent Inspection

The second check involves your vents. If your AC is on but not cooling the house, go around to each vent and make sure it’s open and unobstructed. Closed or blocked vents can lead to uneven cooling or even make it seem like the AC isn’t working at all. Also, check for any noticeable reduction in airflow. If the air is not blowing as strongly as usual, there may be a blockage somewhere in the ductwork.

3. Air Filter Check

One of the most common causes of AC issues is dirty air filters. Over time, dust, dirt, and allergens can accumulate on your filters, limiting the air flowing through the system. If your AC seems to be running but isn’t cooling effectively, check your air filter.

If the filter looks dirty or clogged, replace it. Typically, filters should be replaced every one to three months, depending on usage and environmental factors. Regular filter changes not only maintain your AC’s efficiency but also improve indoor air quality.

4. Outdoor Unit Fan

Your AC system consists of an indoor and an outdoor unit. The fan in the outdoor unit plays a vital role in dispersing heat from your home to the outside. If the fan isn’t running, it could lead to your AC not cooling.

Check to see if the fan on the outdoor unit is operating. Ensure the unit is free from any obstructions like plants or debris that may have built up around it. If it’s not spinning, there may be a power issue to the unit.

5. AC Breaker and Fuse Checks

If the fan isn’t running, it’s time to check your AC’s breaker to see if it has tripped. The breaker can be found in your home’s electrical panel. If the breaker is in the middle position or the ‘off’ position, switch it back to ‘on.’ If it trips again soon after, do not attempt to switch it on again – this could indicate a more serious electrical problem.

If your AC uses a fuse disconnect, check if the fuses need replacing. Fuses protect the AC from power surges. They can blow out and stop the unit from receiving power. Replacing them is a relatively easy and low-cost solution.

However, if you are not comfortable handling electrical components, it’s better to call in a professional to avoid risks.

Even after performing these checks, if your AC still isn’t working correctly, it might indeed be time to reach out to a professional. Pacific Aire offers a range of AC services.
