It’s a great idea to have an HVAC contractor give your air conditioner a tuneup every year. Being proactive with annual care might save you a costly repair down the road if you (or the pro) catch it sooner rather than later. Here are a few tips for troubleshooting and solving common A/C problems:
- A dirty condenser or or evaporator will impede the cooling efficiency of the air conditioner. Check the evaporator and the condenser fins and coils for any debris that could be blocking airflow. This could also include leaves or plants near the condenser. If the condenser turns on and off repeatedly, this is a telltale sign of a dirty condenser.
- Low refrigerant levels are another common A/C problem that can result in inadequate cooling. Either your system was undercharged at installation, or there’s a refrigerant leak. If you can see a leak, it’s time to call a technician and have them fix it.
- If your condenser doesn’t run, check the thermostat to make sure your setting is at least five degrees cooler than the room air. Also check the circuit breaker in your main breaker box as well as at the controller for the unit, and restore the circuit if necessary. If neither of these solve the issue, call a certified technician to fix the issue.
- A dirty air filter will place strain on an air conditioning system. Be sure to replace the air filter every 90 days of and you can see up to 10 percent energy savings.
